Magnesium ???? is perhaps one of our most prescribed minerals in the clinic and often one that clients have read about on their own and have questions about.
It is involved in over 300 enzymatic reactions in your body, including:
- helping to build protein, and support muscle and nerve function,
- blood glucose control, and blood pressure regulation,
- managing calcium levels and is necessary for teeth and bone health,
- it is required for energy production and plays a role in converting food into energy,
- important for neurotransmitter activity, which can impact stress response, mood, and sleep.
Pretty incredible, right?! ????????????
So, with all that said, it’s not surprising that there are at least 4 conditions where research has shown magnesium supplementation, beyond dietary intake, to be helpful:
- Sleep disorders: Almost 60% of adults with sleep disorders were found to have low magnesium intake. Magnesium supplementation before bedtime may help improve sleep quality.
- Stress recovery: During stressful situations, the body tends to lose more magnesium, and low magnesium levels can predispose individuals to depression, anxiety, and impaired stress response. Magnesium supplementation promotes a calming response and can help with stress recovery.
- Osteoporosis: Magnesium supplementation can help improve bone density, and therefore, help reduce risk of osteoporosis.
- Blood sugar regulation: Magnesium supplementation has been shown to decrease blood glucose levels and improve insulin sensitivity.
As always, it’s best to check with your health care provider ????????⚕️ to see if magnesium supplementation is something that would be beneficial for you – at RTB, we’re here to help!
